VICTORIA MEMORIAL was designed by Sir William Emerson and Vincent Esch was the superintending architect while Lord Redesdale and Sir David Prain designed the gardens. the work of construction was entrusted to Messrs Martin & Co. of Calcutta.



Built between 1906 and 1921, it is a majestic white marble building at the southern end of Maidan and surrounded by a sprawling garden. A black bronze Angel of Victory wasplaced at the apex of the dome above the Memorial. It was built in the memory of Queen Victoria, situated in Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, India. Apart froem being a memorial, the monument was intented to serve as a tribute to the success of the British Empire in India. Lord Curzon was envisaged the main idea of the errection ot the Victoria Memorial Hall.



White Makrana marbles were used to build it and was inaugurated in 1921. The massive hall is 338 by 228 feet and raised to a height of 184 feet. The blooming garden around the memorial is speard over an area of 64 acres. one could find amazing compliation of memorabilia of Victoria, British paintings, colllection of weapons, sclupture maps, coins, artifacts, textiles and other exhibitions. One must visit the memorial at night, when it is beautifully illuminated.
